John J. Wilson & Son
Type l and Type ll Yellow-wings.
In the early days of Clearwing breeding, some people were confused as to why some pairings of Whitewing Blue x Yellow-wing Dark Green/blue produced more whitewing cobalts in the nest, whilst other similar pairings produced more Yellow-wing dark greens, and fewer Whitewing Cobalts. It was, however, discovered that there are two types of Yellow-wing dark green /blue.
They look identical, and without knowing their pedigree, the only way to tell which they are is through a test pairing.
Type l :
With the Type l Yellow-wing dark green/blue, the dark factor is linked more closely to the Green.
Type ll:
With the type ll Yellow-wing dark green/blue, the opposite occurs, and the dark factor is linked more closely to the blue.
This all comes about in how the Yellow-wing Dark green/blues were produced in the first place.
Here are a couple of examples;
Whitewing Sky Blue x Y/wing Olive Green/ blue will give:
50% Whitewing Cobalt and 50% Y/Wing dark green/blue Type l.
Whitewing Mauve x Y/Wing Light green/blue will give:
50% Whitewing Cobalt and 50% Y/wing Dark Green/blue Type ll.
